{"id":2416,"date":"2016-02-14T17:00:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-14T17:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webfe10.fe.cpd.local\/caribbeanlithos\/?p=2416"},"modified":"2016-02-27T19:45:24","modified_gmt":"2016-02-27T19:45:24","slug":"2011-tectonic-blocks-in-serpentinite-melange-eastern-cuba-reveal-large-scale-convective-flow-of-the-subduction-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caribbeanlithos.ub.edu\/?p=2416","title":{"rendered":"2011: Tectonic blocks in serpentinite melange (eastern Cuba) reveal large-scale convective flow of the subduction channel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tectonic blocks in serpentinite melange (eastern Cuba) reveal large-scale convective flow of the subduction channel <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Abstract<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Detailed petrological study of mid-oceanic ridge basalt\u2212derived high-pressure amphibolite blocks from a fragment of the Caribbean subduction channel (La Corea serpentinite-matrix m\u00e9lange, eastern Cuba) has revealed contrasted zoning patterns of garnet porphyroblasts, including well-defined complex oscillatory prograde-retrograde concentric zoning in one sample. Calculated pressure-temperature (<em>P<\/em>-<em>T<\/em>) conditions for this sample using mineral inclusion assemblages and isochemical <em>P<\/em>-<em>T<\/em> projections reveal large <em>P<\/em>-<em>T<\/em> recurrences best explained by large-scale convective movement of the tectonic block in a serpentinitic subduction channel. The <em>P<\/em>-<em>T<\/em> conditions attending garnet growth followed an overall counterclockwise path as a consequence of continued refrigeration of the subduction channel during ongoing underflow after its onset ca. 120 Ma. These findings constitute the first report of large-scale convective circulation of deeply subducted material in the subduction channel, and are consistent with the thermomechanical behavior of the channel predicted by numerical models.<\/p>\n<p>----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<\/p>\n<p><strong>To Cite this article:<\/strong> Blanco-Quintero, I.F., Garc\u00eda-casco, A., Gerya, T.
